My Rock. Rain on My Parade.
We knew we wanted different. And we’ve been gathering ideas over the last few months and throughout my trips around the world on creative and meaningful ways to set our celebration apart. I’ve always been drawn to rituals and traditions outside what have become “normal” in western weddings, largely because even secular weddings find many of their roots in Catholic and Christian traditions which I do not always feel connected to.
Enter the idea of an “oathing stone”. Ancient Celtic tradition dictated that holding a stone while the vows were being recited effectively “set them in stone”. More modern brides have taken it more literally and had a stone engraved. I thought it was cool, but as with everything – if you haven’t learned by now! – I wanted to figure out how to make it my own.
So while thinking about the idea of a ceremony that includes the four elements, I thought of how an oathing stone is closely connected to the idea of “earth”, or being grounded. Then I started to think of how one of the elements is water. And my being a pluviophile and all, it immediately clicked how I was going to take this and make it my own.
So, on a sunny Friday, I dragged my mom to a nursery near her house to learn all about fountains. Because of course, we’re not going to find something I can just buy that fits the bill. Nope, this is going to be another DIY element. I’m SO excited to see how this all comes together. I’ll be taking photos as we bring it all together, but this snap was just to save some of the ideas we liked while we were shopping for elements!
